Roller Die MRMH Award Story

Three Roller Die employees, one of whom is holding the MRMH award, standing with Andy Watson and Jim Lash of MMA.Roller Die is a leading supplier of custom roll-formed products across various  industries. They focus on delivering quality products at competitive prices while emphasizing innovation, teamwork, and employee empowerment.

The company was placed on a captive “watch list” due to a low-risk control assessment (RCA) score that ranked them in the bottom 15%. This score, based on six key indicators, revealed significant issues, including an average of 16 days to report workers’ compensation claims, well above the target of five days. Additionally, Roller Die’s workers’ compensation frequency rate and loss ratio were significantly higher than the captive average. The primary objective was to improve these metrics and be removed from the captive ‘watch list’.

Roller Die partnered with Marsh McLennan Agency (MMA) to enhance their safety programs and improve their position in the captive. Their goal was to significantly reduce lag time days, workers’ compensation frequency, and controlling/reducing claims.

The first step was creating a safety committee that holds monthly meetings with management and floor representatives from all Roller Die locations. Guided by MMA, the meetings consist of:

  • Specific safety training topic
  • Review of previous incidents (injuries and non-injuries)
  • Open forum for discussing best practices across all locations

Roller Die then leveraged MMA’s workers’ compensation advanced advocacy team to further control claim costs. Open claim activity was discussed more frequently, and MMA conducted annual onsite safety audits at each location to monitor policy practices and identify physical hazards for correction, which led to a reduction in loss ratio.

Roller Die’s dedication to fostering a culture of safety extended to all employees across all locations. Attendance at the monthly safety meetings rose from four or five to more than 20 participants. As a result, they experienced a 40% reduction in workers’ compensation claims. Roller Die’s commitment to safety has transformed their captive standing, moving from the bottom to the top half of the captive benchmark.
